Glenfiddich IPA Experiment Review – Whisky aged in IPA beer barrels

Nov 26, 2018 | Spirits, Drink

The Glenfiddich distillery was one of the first tours I can remember from my childhood which was not a pencil or box factory.

I must have been around 12 or 13 at the time, but it still sticks in the memory, having never really been anywhere like it before.

The smell from the distillery is still very vivid in my mind – an intense yeasty, malty aroma and the whole experience kickstarted my fascination with how these concoctions were made – even though it would be many years before I began to drink scotch.

Having more recently developed an increasing interest in barrel flavouring in beer, when I heard about Glenfiddich Project IPA I was keen to try.

It’s a reversal of sorts – how would a beer cask affect the whisky flavour? Just a gimmick, or worth earning a spot in the drinks cabinet?

While I can’t say I immediately noticed the IPA influence, this is a great whisky. A deep amber in colour, accentuated by the stylish new bottle and packaging. The whisky is rich and smooth with caramel notes. Perhaps a little malty and hoppy, with a faint taste of fresh bread.

I really enjoyed this, and can appreciate the effort put into creating something new and innovative in the traditional scotch market, while staying true to the Glenfiddich quality people have come to expect.

A great Christmas gift for your Dad, brother, Father-in-law, whiskey-loving friend, or maybe just for yourself. You can get it for around £44 at many supermarkets, and online.

Have you tried this whiskey? Can you recommend any other beer / whiskey collaborations? Share your thoughts in the comments.
