Tasting Cocoa Beers from Hotel Chocolat

Nov 6, 2017 | Beer, Beer Reviews

I love a good bar of dark chocolate and a beer to go with it.

In fact, I even used to be partial to dipping a Cadbury’s finger biscuits into a bottle of lager. Trust me, it works!

With that in mind, I was glad to try these two beers sold by Hotel Chocolat who collaborated with Suffolk’s Brewshed brewery to create them.

1. Pale Cocoa Beer – Golden Ale 4.9%

  • Cocoa Pulp Infused, refreshing golden ale’

This Hotel Chocolat beer is a golden ale which uses the sweet green pulp which surrounds the bean in a cocoa pod.

It’s very subtle and something my lazy tongue had trouble distinguishing.

The beer was very drinkable with good balance and, as you’d expect, a bright golden colour.

I did not really get a significant citrus tang, especially compared to the fruity hop-bombs some breweries are currently producing.

2. Dark Cocoa Beer – Porter 4.7#%

  • Cocoa Shell Infused, Malty Style’

Hotel Chocolat Dark Cocoa

This Hotel Chocolat beer is brewed with the discarded shells of the cocoa pods, which are left over from chocolate-making process.

The beer has a silky mouthfeel and there is the coffee and chocolate flavours which come through.

Both of these beers should not be served too cold, and this one especially opens up as it warms.

As it is only 4.7%, I’m hoping for a beefed up imperial special of this one. Box it up for Christmas and jobs a good’un!

The beer paired perfectly with a beef and pork chilli.

These beers make a great gift. Opt for the darker beer and perhaps the beer chocolate collection to go with it!

Feels like a while since we’ve explored a new place due to COVID and the toddler, so a visit to the Cotswolds came at the perfect time this spring.

After Improssibrew present their beers on Dragon’s Den, I decided to try it for myself to see if this so-called ‘social blend’ worked.
